Emergency First Aid for Supported Accommodation

The Emergency First Aid for Supported Accommodation course provides staff with the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to respond safely and effectively to medical emergencies involving young people aged 16+. This training aligns with the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, Supported Accommodation Regulations 2023, Ofsted SCCIF, and organisational safeguarding policies. Staff learn how to assess emergencies, deliver CPR, use an AED, manage choking, asthma, anaphylaxis, seizures, diabetic episodes, bleeding, shock, injuries, and accommodation-specific risks such as overdose, poisoning, and environmental hazards. The course emphasises trauma-informed responses, accurate recording, escalation procedures, and how first aid links to support plans, safeguarding, and quality assurance.

Primary Survey & Life-Saving Interventions
- Conducting a DRABC primary survey (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation).
- Placing an unresponsive but breathing young person in the recovery position.
- Performing CPR on young people/adults and safe, effective AED use.
- Recognising when to call emergency services and how to escalate appropriately.
Breathing & Airway Emergencies
- Managing choking (back blows, abdominal thrusts).
- Responding to asthma attacks with inhalers/spacers.
- Identifying and treating anaphylaxis using adrenaline auto-injectors.
- Escalation pathways and safeguarding considerations.
Medical Conditions & Sudden Illness
- First aid for seizures, epilepsy, diabetic emergencies, allergic reactions, and panic attacks.
- Trauma-informed response during medical crises.
- Understanding thresholds for 999 calls and professional escalation.
Injuries, Bleeding & Shock
- Managing minor and severe bleeding with safe pressure techniques.
- Recognising hypovolaemic and anaphylactic shock.
- Treating fractures, sprains, burns, head injuries, and suspected spinal injuries.
- Maintaining safety until emergency services arrive.
Supported Accommodation–Specific Emergencies
- Responding to overdose or substance misuse incidents.
- Managing poisoning, smoke inhalation, hypothermia, and heatstroke.
- Adapting first aid to the developmental and emotional needs of young people.
- Applying trauma-informed communication and PACE-based approaches.
First Aid Equipment, Records & Reporting
- Essential items for a compliant first aid kit in supported accommodation.
- Routine kit maintenance, stock checks, accessibility, and expiry checks.
- Recording first aid incidents accurately in line with Reg 32, RIDDOR, and policy.
- Linking incidents to risk assessments and contributing to incident reviews.
Promoting a Safe, Health-Focused Environment
- Connecting first aid responses to support plans, health plans, and risk assessments.
- Partnership working with GPs, NHS 111, paramedics, CAMHS, and families.
- Encouraging young people to learn basic first aid as part of independence skills.
- Ongoing CPD, refresher training, and reflective practice for staff.
